Screening Party - Dennis Hensley

Screening Party, another recommendation from the fabulous Amy, was a great read. It reminded me of a cross between Mystery Science Theater and my group of friends. Lots of running commentary on the movies, snippets of real life, and excellent humor. Two thumbs up! I'm looking forward to reading more of Dennis Hensley's work.

The Ballad of Frankie Silver - Sharyn McCrumb

The Ballad of Frankie Silver was the One Book, One Community choice for all of Macomb County for 2003. I had a really hard time getting into the novel, and found myself continually putting it down to do other things, even housework! I was leading a book discussion about the novel, and finally finished it with a couple days to spare. I wouldn't mind trying out some of Sharyn McCrumb's other novels, but getting through Frankie Silver was a task...

I'm Still Hungry - Carnie Wilson

I'm still hungry : Finding myself through thick and thin, Carnie Wilson's followup to Gut Feelings, was an interesting read. I'm not sure yet if I liked it or not.

I'm still hungry... picks up where her first book left off. We're treated to Carnie's post gastric bypass surgery experiences, her opinions, and her recommendations for diet and exercise. Having gone through a different form of gastric bypass (duodenal switch) than the one Carnie had (roux-en-y), I found the book very limited in scope. Carnie lays down the law as if her experience is the ONLY experience, which could be very confusing to those people that may be researching the surgery as well as their surgical options. There's also a chapter on Carnie's experience with posing for Playboy magazine, which is interesting and sometimes amsuing. Carnie's done a great deal to bring gastric bypass, as well as issues surrounding morbid obesity, into the limelight in a non-offensive manner, and for that, I give her credit. It give me inspiration, too... maybe I'll write a book on my gastric byapss experience... it'd be nice to read something from a perspective other than a celebrity.
