I could find little detail online, so I borrowed the true crime book and worked my way through it. Turns out I live about a mile and a half from where Leann and Mick Fletcher lived, and where Leann died. I remember the very high profile case and the coverage that went along with it. The book shed little new light, and I found myself quibbling with some of the factual information about the communities represented by the author, as I had lived and/or worked in them. If you're a true crime fan, this one may be of interest, otherwise, there are better choices out there.

I'm slowly working my way through the novel and this passage really jumped out at me:
I'll be honest about it. It is not atheists who get stuck in my craw, but agnostics. Doubt is useful for a while. We must all pass through the garden of Gethsemane. If Christ played with doubt, so must we. If Christ spent an anguished night in prayer, if He burst out from the Cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" then surely we are also permitted doubt. But we must move on. To choose doubt as a philosophy of life is akin to choosing immobility as a means of transportation.
The italics are *my* emphasis, not Yann Martel's (the author).

I stayed up way too late reading The Life of Pi. Once the story moved beyond Pi's religious exploration, it did indeed pick up. I think I preferred the exploration part, though the rest of the story is pretty absorbing as well.
